Sermon Series: Sola: Martin Luther’s Five ‘Solas’

2017 | 15 October – 26 November | Sermon Series: Sola: Martin Luther’s Five ‘Solas’ |

This series explores what are known as The Five ‘Solas’ (Latin for alone or only) and how they are still central to our faith today. The five phrases form the basis of the Gospel and assert that salvation is according to Scripture alone, in Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone, for the glory of God alone.

On 31st October 1617, the German Monk, Martin Luther, posted ‘95 Theses’ for debate on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. The ‘Theses’ were about love and forgiveness and it began the greatest movement in the Church since the Early Church.

Over the past 500 years, the Reformation, as it became known, has dominated and shaped the fabric of European society, whether that be politics, the Monarchy, or the legal system, not to mention the Protestant Church.
